How do you define success?

How do you define success?

Is it landing a dream job? A certain income bracket? An award? A professional achievement?

What will it take to get you to that peak of your performance?

Finishing a postgrad degree? Taking on new responsibilities in your position? Developing key skills? Growing your resume?

Imagine all of those things come together for you. You hit every wicket. You did exactly what was expected of you. And you achieved that dream of success.

Then what?

No, really. What would that success change about how you see yourself?

Striving for goals can be a beautiful, motivating, exhilarating part of our lives, if we understand who we’re really striving to become. And that version of success isn’t something that’s easily summed up in a professional bio.

What if achieving success looked less like racking up external accomplishments and more about growing into the human we truly intended to become? How would that change the metrics we use to measure our own success?

I know, I’m hitting you with a lot of deep questions right now, but you know I’ll never leave you hanging!

I have had some incredible conversations recently over on In the Details, with women who absolutely inspired me, and each one of them offered incredible insight about how we aim for success and how we define success. One of the things I love most about each of these women is that they’re living out their “aha” moments around these topics, and they’re walking the walk and leading from their own personal journeys.

So if you know you want to figure out the balance between realizing goals and investing in true satisfaction and fulfillment, here’s your invitation to take the leap. Pick the episode that resonates with you, and let’s dig in together!

1. Purpose and Self-Discovery

Amy Wong | In the Details podcast | Karen Allen

Amy is an executive leadership coach and founder of Always on Purpose, which helps leaders learn to connect to their true selves, which allows them to develop more authentic relationships, which helps them develop the skills they need to create thriving teams.

She’s also the author of

When Amy’s son was born, she had a powerful sudden realization: She wasn’t fully embracing her true passion, the thing that brought her a sense of joy and satisfaction. She was working at a job where she was hitting all of the metrics of success, but she didn’t feel like that success resonated with her own sense of purpose.

The more she dug in, the more she realized that while most of us are chasing the tangible aspects of what we think success looks like, what we’re really trying to find is the feeling hitting those goals will bring us.

Amy and I talked about shifting the conversation we have about success from “What do I want to do?” to “What do I want to feel?”

Check out Amy’s episode to learn more about her practical advice for how to sidestep the “shoulds” as we make decisions about who we want to be and how we want to show up.

2. Self-Confidence and Finding Your Unique Strengths

Lisa Sun | In the Details podcast | Karen Allen

Lisa is the founder and CEO of GRAVITAS, an incredible fashion company focused on empowering women so that they can bring their best selves to each day by helping them tap into their self-confidence superpower.

She’s also the author of the new book,

where she shares what she’s learned about how to redefine what it means to be confident so that you can build a sense of self-worth that flows from your own strengths.

Early in her career, Lisa got feedback on her first performance review that absolutely changed her life: “Lisa comes across as young and overly enthusiastic at times. She should seek to have more gravitas.”

That set Lisa on a mission to understand her own strengths and choose to nurture her own self-confidence. That’s right, I said choose self-confidence, which is an idea that Lisa and I talked a lot about!

What does it look like to develop a mindset of confidence that’s unshakeable because it’s based in your own superpower and self-worth? And how would that help you and forge her own version of success?

Tune in to hear more about Lisa’s thoughts on building self-confidence and why being open to and embracing feedback is an essential part of that journey. (And while you’re thinking about it, check out Lisa's quiz designed to help you identify your own unique strengths, the foundation of this journey.)

3. Success and Happiness

Laura Gassner Ottig | In the Details podcast | Karen Allen

Her TED Talk, “Why Doesn’t Success Bring Happiness?”, has been viewed well over a million times.

Laura was riding high on the massive success of her first book, which shared her research and insights into how to find both success and happiness, when she came to an unexpected realization: She was experiencing the challenges she’d written about in her own book—the high highs that come with achievement but also the anxiety, stress, impostor syndrome, and internal pressure that can steal all of that joy.

She says it was her own personal Wonderhell.

Laura realized if, with all of her experience and knowledge and tools, she needed to understand how to find the balance and figure out how to keep her greatest successes from also becoming a never-ending grind of one-upping herself, then these may be lessons worth sharing with the rest of the world.

She and I talked about how we can create a mindset around our goals that allows us to flex and reevaluate what we really want without letting the finish line become the only measure of success. Here’s just one taste of some of the truth bombs Laura dropped in our conversation: “You can be insatiably hungry for someone else’s goals.”

Tune in to hear Laura’s incredible wisdom about how we step back from societal goals and embrace our own definitions of success.
